An average calculator online gives you the mean, median, sum, and more from any list of numbers - paste your data and get all statistics at once without a spreadsheet.

What Statistics Does the Calculator Compute?

Given a list of numbers, the tool computes:

How to Use the Average Calculator

  1. Open the Average Calculator on UtilWave.
  2. Type or paste your numbers into the input field.
  3. Numbers can be separated by commas, spaces, or line breaks - any combination works.
  4. All statistics update instantly as you type.
  5. Copy individual results with one click.

Mean vs Median - Which Should You Use?

Both mean and median measure the "center" of a dataset, but they behave differently:

Mean adds all values and divides. It is sensitive to outliers: one extremely high value can pull the mean far from most of the data.

Median finds the middle value. It is resistant to outliers: a few extreme values do not affect it.

When to use mean: when data is roughly symmetrical and has no extreme outliers (heights, exam scores, manufacturing tolerances).

When to use median: when data is skewed or has outliers (home prices, income, response times).

Example: Home prices in a neighborhood: $250k, $280k, $300k, $310k, $2,500k

Common Use Cases

Student grade analysis - Find the class average and median score to assess overall performance and outliers.

Business metrics - Average response time, order value, or customer score across a dataset.

Sports statistics - Average points, assists, or completion percentages for a player.

Financial analysis - Average monthly spending, revenue per period, or unit cost.

Data cleaning - Identify outliers by comparing values far from the mean.

FAQ

How do I enter negative numbers? Type the minus sign before the number: -15, 8, 23, -4. The calculator handles negative values correctly.

Can I calculate a weighted average? This tool computes a simple (unweighted) average. For weighted averages, multiply each value by its weight, sum the products, and divide by the sum of weights.

What is the difference between mean and average? In everyday usage, "average" refers to the arithmetic mean. In statistics, there are multiple types of averages (mean, median, mode). This tool computes the arithmetic mean.

What is the mode? The mode is the most frequently occurring value in a dataset. The calculator does not compute the mode directly, but you can identify it by scanning the sorted list.
