An online image format converter lets you change an image from one file format to another - PNG to JPG, JPG to WebP, or WebP to PNG - without installing any software. Our free tool runs entirely in your browser, so no image is ever uploaded to a server.
What are the Common Image Formats?
Three formats dominate web and digital use:
-
PNG (Portable Network Graphics) - lossless compression with support for transparency (alpha channel). Best for logos, icons, screenshots, and graphics with text. Files are larger than JPEG.
-
JPEG / JPG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) - lossy compression optimized for photographs and complex images with gradients. No transparency support. Produces smaller files than PNG for photos.
-
WebP - a modern format developed by Google that supports both lossy and lossless compression, as well as transparency and animation. Typically 25–34% smaller than JPEG and 26% smaller than PNG at equivalent quality. Supported by all modern browsers.
Choosing the right format has a significant impact on page load speed and visual quality.

- Converting JPG photos to WebP for faster website loading
- Removing the white background from a JPEG by converting to PNG (if the original had transparency)
- Preparing images for web upload that require a specific format
- Batch-testing image quality before committing to a format for a project
- Converting WebP files downloaded from the web back to PNG for editing in older software
Frequently Asked Questions
Does converting PNG to JPG preserve image quality? Not perfectly - JPEG uses lossy compression, so converting a PNG to JPEG discards some image data that cannot be recovered. For photographs, the quality loss is usually imperceptible at 85%+ quality settings. For images with sharp edges, text, or solid colors, PNG or WebP lossless is better.
Can I convert a JPEG to PNG without quality loss? Yes. PNG is lossless, so converting a JPEG to PNG produces a lossless representation of the JPEG - but it does not recover data already lost during the original JPEG compression. The PNG will be larger but will not degrade further.
Does the tool support transparent backgrounds? PNG and WebP support transparency. If you convert a transparent PNG to JPEG, the transparent areas will be filled with a solid color (usually white) since JPEG does not support transparency.
Is there a file size limit? No hard limit is enforced, but very large images may take a moment to process since all conversion happens in your browser.
